Neo-Classical/Post Rock

Fragile and emotional neu-classical music would maybe be the best term to describe Olafur Arnalds’ music. Combining classical instrumentation with an ambient aesthetic there are obvious comparisons to fellow Icelanders Sigur Ros and composer Hilmar Orn Hilmarsson, but Arnalds is sculpting his own epic, string-laden compositions.
Only 21 years of age, Olafur hails from the suburban Icelandic town, Mosfellsb?r, just a few kilometres outside Reykjavik. He has immersed himself completely in the world of delicate symphonic compositions in a near weightless orchestral undertaking

Elend is a band formed in France in 1993 by composers and multi-instrumentalists Iskandar Hasnawi of France and Renaud Tschirner of Austria. The band’s name is German for “misery.” Early Elend albums utilized samplers and synths to create a dense and horrifying orchestral sound. In recent albums for the Winds Cycle, Elend’s sound has broadened; they have incorporated industrial elements and now rely almost entirely on acoustic instruments and chamber orchestras instead of synths, giving them a more full and natural sound.
Elend is often classified as a metal act due to the fact that in their earlier days, they were signed to Holy Records, which released metal music almost exclusively, as well as due to them having members formerly in metal bands. Elend’s sound has sometimes been very violent, containing harsh atonal dissonance and screaming, tormented vocals, but they have never been metal of any form.

Dark Ambient/Atmospheric/Neo-Classical/Symphonic Music

Helped by some guests (Horns, oboe, flute, cello…), ISILDURS BANE plays a majestuous orchestral symphonic between vocals, guitar, keyboards and flute. They are very percussion oriented, with a lot of keyboards and some guitar. This swedish band has a unique sound, with great playing, but it might require a couple of listenings to grow on you. Recommended to fans of Eclectic, intricate music.
Symphonic fans should try “Sagan Om Den Irlandska Algen” or the classic “Sagan Om Rigen”. One symphonic/modern classical concept album, “Cheval” was recorded with an orchestra and is an unusual, but effective blend of chamber rock and classical music. And the “MIND* Vol. 1″ album is a real Classic for all times: a unique, distinguished blend of contemporary Classical Music and Symphonic Progressive Rock with extremely complex structures. “MIND* Vol. 2″ (2CDs) consists practically of all (and only) new compositions. On the “MIND* Vol. 3″ album, and the band’s concept MIND* is still alive. This one is a masterpiece. FOR THE ADVENTUROUS AND OPEN-MINDED!!!
For the first time since 1983, ISILDURS BANE have recorded an album with vocals and lyrics. “MIND Vol. 4: Pass” is characterized by strong melodies, experimental synth sounds and elaborate sound treatments. The music was recomposed and rearranged, new lyrics were written and a new approach to doing songs was the order of the day.
*(Which is an abbreviation of “Music Investigating New Dimensions”.)

Angizia

Angizia is an Austrian Avant Garde group which has been also categorized as “Circus Metal”. It can be defined as a mixture of the operetta of the 19th century, Central European folk music with a little touch of gothic dramatism and a bit of metal as well. The band was created by Michael Haas (also known as Engelke) in 1994. Their first work, “Die Kemenaten scharlachroter Lichter” (1997) was accepted positively by critics. The band’s next work was the “Russian trilogy” consisting of the albums “Das Tagebuch der Hanna Anikin”, “Das Schachbrett Des Trommelbuben Zacharias” and “39 Jahre fur den Leierkastenmann”. “39 Jahre fur den Leierkastenmann” (subtitled “Ein Stuck fur die Judenstadt”) is a play of three acts that narrates the misfortunes of four Russian and Jewish musicians during World War II.

Winds is a Norwegian neo-classical/progressive metal band formed in 1998. The music is largely influenced by classical music, with Andy Winter’s piano work and Carl August Tidemann’s intricate, technical guitar solos, often the central focuses. The lyrics are written by Andy Winter, and deal mostly with astral and existentialist philosophy.
Neo-classical Progressive Metal
(the first album and EP have doom/dark metal influences, I suppose)
