Thinking Plague was a United States avant-garde rock group founded in 1982 by guitarist/composer, Mike Johnson, and bass guitarist/drummer Bob Drake. Based in Denver, Colorado, the band was active on and off since 1982, taking on a number of musicians over the years. They made five studio albums between 1984 and 2003, and released one live album recorded at NEARfest in 2000.
Their music is a mix of rock, folk, jazz and 20th century classical music. Music.com remarked that “…Thinking Plague stand out as a shining example of avant-garde music blended with just enough rock for it to be called progressive rock…”
While never directly related to Rock in Opposition (rio), Thinking Plague was strongly influenced by this late-1970s movement, particularly Henry Cow and Art Bears. In spite of Johnson’s dislike of the term, the band has often been categorized as a “RIO” band.

Miasma and the Carousel of Headless Horses are a London based instrumental 5 piece band who have been around for about 3 years at the time of writing. The band coalesced around Daniel O’Sullivan, who asked Dave Smith of Guapo to join as drummer. This he did, and at the same time O’Sullivan joined Guapo on keyboards. Since then Guapo’s original bassist has left to be replaced by Miasma’s Dave Ledden, further strengthening the bond between the two bands. In addition to Guapo the members play in other bands, including Alabama 3, Amal Gamal Ensemble, Knuckles and all manner of other collaborations. Acoustic instruments are prominent and there is an obvious East European folk influence, with some of the feel of Goblin’s soundtrack work.
They have released one album so far, Perils, and have also collaborated in a theatrical production with the Horse Hospital.
Although they are listed under RIO/Avant prog, they could also be recommended to fans of progressive folk or anybody with a taste for the bizarre and slightly sinister.

DISEN GAGE branched out in 1999 when guitarist Konstantin Mochalov, guitarist Yuri Alaverdyan, and bassist Nikolai Syrtsev were studying at Moscow Engineering Physics Institute. Joined by Eugeny Kudryashov on drums, the quartet started playing out in their native college-club and became known with a surprising quickness due to fantastically fast spread amateur cassettes and their reputation for insanely emotional live performances at various student-festivals. The band’s collaborative approach combined the intricate instrumentation of old-school progressive rock, the melodic expressionism of ethno-jazz, and the rough drive of garage-rock. Music-lovers apprehended the band as a phenomenon in local indie-scene, one of a few heirs in Russia to the traditions of instrumental rock. In addition to their work with the band, Mochalov, Alaverdyan and Syrtsev continued working as researchers at the Moscow Institute of Bio-Organic Chemistry, and Kudryashov played with a number of local indie-pop-rock groups. In 2002, tearing apart between their musical and academic interests the band practically stopped concert activity. Two years later, Yuri Alaverdyan left to continue his academic career in Sweden. Nevertheless, the quartet got over the difficulties with the appearance of the crafted guitarist Sergei Bagin, and returned to the active concert practice.

X-Legged Sally is a Belgian avant-garde rock/jazz-band founded in 1988 by composer Peter Vermeersch, and disbanded in 1997. They were one of the first bands from Belgium to combine a set of very different musical styles (jazz, rock, improvisation and classical), becoming a starting point for the Belgian indie music scene that developed in the nineties.
After their farewell concert on april 20, 1996, the members of X-Legged Sally spread out in various musical directions, although mutual cooperations still happen. Peter Vermeersch founded A Group (together with Pierre Vervloesem), and later the Flat Earth Society, Eric Sleichim started Bl!ndman, and Pierre Vervloesem featured in a lot of bands and has a productive solo career.
