Akercocke - Antichrist

Antichrist is another marvellous metal opus from
Akercocke. They just can't fail. And maybe the
expectations were set a little too high for their
newest album, as their previous, especially the two
latest, showed a quantum leap in musical
progression. While holding tight onto their metal
roots, they've incorporated a lot of prog and avant
garde influences, and they keep their experiments
going on here. Good examples are "Distant Fires
Reflect the Eyes of Satan" and "Epode", which hardly
include any electric guitars, let alone heavy riffs.
And other standouts are "Axiom" and "My Apterous
Angel". But then again, since there's been so much
progress and evolution in their sound, and constant
surprises, it makes perfect sense that Antichrist
can't be as groundbreaking, and is that the primary
fault with this otherwise stellar album. It's by no
means a regression, just picks up where Deeds...
left off, even though Antichrist does resemble
Rape of the Bastard Nazarene and The Goat of Mendes
a lot more in sound than before. So, it might shift
the focus a bit more on heaviness of earlier works,
while keeping in the prog of later two albums. This
is a highlight of the 2007 heavy metal department.
